A practical checklist for CFOs and operators. Score yourself across process, data, ROI, risk and ownership — before you fund another pilot that goes nowhere.

**Direct answer.** The AI Opportunity Scorecard is a free checklist that helps CFOs and operators score process readiness, data quality, ROI, risk and ownership before committing budget to another AI pilot.

Rate each criterion 0–10. Total of 100. Below 50 usually means fix ownership and baselines first. 70+ is when a structured Audit earns its fee.

Why score first Why

## Ten minutes now, *not a wasted quarter.*

The scorecard exists because most AI proposals arrive with a tool attached and the hard questions missing. Who owns the workflow? What does it cost today? What data will the tool see, and who checks the output? If those answers are blank, the score will show it, and that is cheaper to learn now than after a renewal.

Those gaps are common. Gartner predicted that [at least 30% of generative AI projects would be abandoned after proof of concept by the end of 2025](https://www.gartner.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2024-07-29-gartner-predicts-30-percent-of-generative-ai-projects-will-be-abandoned-after-proof-of-concept-by-end-of-2025), with unclear business value and weak risk controls among the reasons. Use is also running ahead of design: in Microsoft and LinkedIn's 2024 Work Trend Index, [75% of knowledge workers said they use generative AI at work, and 78% of those users bring their own tools](https://news.microsoft.com/source/2024/05/08/microsoft-and-linkedin-release-the-2024-work-trend-index-on-the-state-of-ai-at-work/). And McKinsey's 2025 survey found [only about a third of organisations have begun to scale AI](https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/quantumblack/our-insights/the-state-of-ai), even though most use it somewhere.

Score honestly. A low score on ownership or data is not a failure; it is the most useful result the checklist can give you.
