CA students are using AI whether firms and coaching classes like it or not. On student forums the same complaint keeps appearing: the chatbot sounded confident, the answer was wrong, and the student only found out in a mock test. Search results for “ChatGPT for CA students” are mostly forum threads and short videos, with very little structured advice.

I am a CA and I now help firms adopt AI. This is what I would tell a student about using it for preparation, honestly and without hype.

## The exam has not got easier

In the [CA Final May 2026 result](https://www.icai.org/post/prc-caresult-may2026), 14.07% of candidates who appeared in both groups passed: 3,345 out of 23,776. Group I was 12% and Group II 20.49%. Those numbers are a reminder that the exam tests applied judgement under time pressure. A tool that hands you finished answers can make you feel prepared while weakening exactly that skill.

The healthy way to use AI is the way a good senior uses a junior: to save time on the mechanical parts while doing the thinking yourself. If the tool does the thinking, the gap only shows in the exam hall, where there is no chatbot and the question has a twist you have never practised.

## Where AI genuinely helps a student

- Explaining a concept a second way when the study material is not landing.
- Turning your own notes into flashcards and quick revision questions.
- Building a study timetable around articleship hours and exam dates.
- Checking the structure of a written answer you have already attempted.
- Practising viva-style questions on a topic before group study.

## Where it misleads

General chatbots are weakest exactly where CA exams are strictest: current tax rates and provisions, amendments, section numbers, and computational questions with several adjustments. They also tend to give an answer rather than say “it depends”, which is the opposite of how examiners reward reasoning. Treat any figure, section or case name from a general chatbot as unverified until you have found it in ICAI material.

ICAI’s own [CA GPT](https://ai.icai.org/cagpt/) is built on institute content and is a safer starting point for students than a general tool. It is still a study aid, not a replacement for the study material, RTPs and MTPs.

## Habits that build exam skill

- Attempt first, ask second: write your answer before asking any tool, then compare.
- Ask the tool to find errors in your answer rather than to write one.
- Verify every number and provision against the study material for your attempt.
- Keep a log of the tool’s mistakes; it trains your scepticism, which the profession needs.
- Never paste confidential client data from articleship into a personal chatbot.

## Articleship is where AI skills count

Under the new scheme, practical training lasts two years, according to ICAI’s [FAQs on the New Scheme of Education and Training](https://resource.cdn.icai.org/75315bos-faqs-nset-july1.pdf). That is when you will meet AI tools in real work: reconciliations, working papers, notice drafts. Firms will value article assistants who can review machine output critically, not just operate the tool. My piece on [how CA firms should train article assistants](https://pratikbajoria.com/blog/2026-10-15-ai-and-articleship-how-ca-firms-should-train-article-assistants-now) covers the firm’s side.

## The skills employers will look for

The World Economic Forum’s [Future of Jobs Report 2025](https://www.weforum.org/publications/the-future-of-jobs-report-2025/in-full/3-skills-outlook/) expects 39% of workers’ core skills to change by 2030, with AI and big data the fastest-growing skills. For a newly qualified CA, that means comfort with AI tools plus the judgement to know when they are wrong. ## Frequently asked questions

### Is ChatGPT useful for CA exam preparation?

Yes, for explaining concepts, revision questions, timetables and reviewing answers you have already written. It is unreliable for current tax provisions, section numbers and multi-step computations, so verify everything against ICAI material.

### What is ICAI CA GPT?

An AI platform from ICAI built on institute content, available to members and students through the ICAI AI portal. It is a safer starting point than a general chatbot but is still a study aid.

### How hard is CA Final now?

In the May 2026 CA Final, 14.07% of candidates who appeared in both groups passed (3,345 of 23,776), according to ICAI’s result press release.

### Can I use AI during articleship work?

Only with your principal’s approval and the firm’s approved tools. Never paste client data into a personal chatbot account, and always review the output before it goes into a working paper.

### Should CA students learn AI tools?

Yes. Articleship and early jobs increasingly involve reviewing AI output, and the WEF expects AI and big data to be the fastest-growing skills to 2030. Learn the tools and the habit of checking them.
