Best AI courses for chartered accountants in India in 2026: what ICAI’s AICA Levels 1–3 cost and cover, when a paid course helps, and how to learn AI on your own client work.

Key takeaways

- Start with ICAI's AICA Level 1: three days for ₹5,000 plus GST, with 18 structured CPE hours.
- AICA Level 2 costs ₹10,000 plus GST; Level 3 was launched in June 2026.
- CA GPT is free for ICAI members and a zero-cost place to start.
- Before paying for a private course, check it uses Indian CA work, has you build something and teaches review and data rules.
- A course will not fix implementation: pick one workflow, take a baseline and write a one-page data rule.

If you are a chartered accountant in India looking for an AI course, start with ICAI’s own AI for Chartered Accountants (AICA) certificate, because it is cheap, earns structured CPE hours and is designed around CA work. Then spend far more time applying AI to one real workflow in your practice than collecting further certificates. A course teaches you what the tools can do; only your own files teach you where they break.

I get asked about courses every week, usually by partners who have just watched a junior do in ten minutes what used to take an afternoon. Here is how I would think about it.

## ICAI’s AICA courses: what they cost and cover

ICAI’s AI Committee runs a three-level certificate. The figures below are taken from ICAI’s own pages as I write this; check them before you book, because fees and formats change.

| Level | Format | Fee | CPE |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| AICA Level 1 | 3 days, classroom, at ICAI branches ([course guidelines](https://ai.icai.org/assets/upload/attachment/AICA_5.0.pdf)) | ₹5,000 + GST ([ICAI AI site](https://ai.icai.org/aica.php)) | 18 structured hours |
| AICA Level 2 | 2 days online plus 3 days in person ([ICAI batch listings](https://ai.icai.org/aica_level2.php)) | ₹10,000 + GST ([ICAI AI site](https://ai.icai.org/aica_level2.php)) | See the batch details |
| AICA Level 3 | Advanced; only for members who have completed Level 2 ([launched June 2026](https://www.icai.org/post/icai-ais2026-26062026)) | See ICAI announcements | See ICAI announcements |

Level 1 asks for basic computer and Office skills, your own laptop and a daily online assessment, and it includes a group project on real finance and audit use cases. Scale is not a problem: ICAI reported that [more than 7,500 members had registered within months of launch](https://icai.org/post/prc-icai-unveils-groundbreaking-ca-gpt-platform), and by June 2026 it said it had [trained over 50,000 members in AI](https://www.icai.org/post/icai-ais2026-26062026).

ICAI also makes CA GPT available free to members; it [launched on 1 July 2024](https://icai.org/post/prc-icai-unveils-groundbreaking-ca-gpt-platform) and ICAI reported more than 70,000 members using it by November that year. If you have never tried a domain-specific assistant, that is a zero-cost place to start.

## When a paid private course is worth it

There are plenty of paid “AI for CA” programmes. Some are good. Before you pay, ask four questions:

- **Does it use Indian CA work?** GST reconciliation, tax audit reports, Tally exports, CARO, notices. Generic “AI for business” content will not transfer.
- **Do you build something?** A working prompt library, a reconciliation workflow or a checklist you can use on Monday is worth more than hours of slides.
- **Does it teach review and data rules?** If confidentiality, client data and checking output are not on the syllabus, the course is teaching you to create risk faster.
- **Who teaches it?** Someone who has implemented AI inside a practice or finance team, not only someone who demos tools.

Note that I am not naming or ranking private providers, because I have not audited their syllabuses and I will not recommend something I have not checked.

## What a course will not give you

Every partner I work with who finished a course hit the same wall: back in the office, nobody decided which workflow to change, who reviews output or what data may go into which tool. That is an implementation problem, not a skills gap. The fix is unglamorous: pick one workflow, take a baseline, write a one-page data rule and run it for ninety days with full review. My [90-day AI pilot playbook for CA firms](https://pratikbajoria.com/blog/2026-10-07-how-to-run-a-90-day-ai-pilot-in-a-ca-firm-in-india) sets out each step.

## A self-study plan that costs almost nothing

1. **Week 1:** try CA GPT and one business-grade general assistant on a redacted sample of real work. Compare the output with what your team would have produced. My comparison of [ChatGPT vs Copilot vs Gemini for a CA firm](https://pratikbajoria.com/blog/2026-10-05-chatgpt-vs-copilot-vs-gemini-how-a-ca-firm-in-india-should-choose-an-ai-assistant) helps you choose.
2. **Week 2:** read the [AI controls checklist for CA firms](https://pratikbajoria.com/blog/ai-controls-checklist-ca-firms-india) and agree, in writing, what may never go into a tool.
3. **Weeks 3–4:** apply AI to one workflow, for example [AI for GST reconciliation](https://pratikbajoria.com/blog/2026-09-28-how-indian-ca-firms-can-use-ai-for-gst-reconciliation-without-risking-client-data), and log the time taken and errors caught.
4. **Then:** take AICA Level 1 with real questions in hand. You will get far more out of three days in a classroom once you know where you are stuck.

## My recommendation

For most CAs: AICA Level 1, CA GPT and one disciplined pilot. For partners who want the whole firm moving, training alone rarely does it; you need someone to map workflows and set the controls. That is what the [AI Opportunity Audit](https://pratikbajoria.com/audit) is for. ## Courses are not the whole answer for juniors

For article assistants, day-to-day habits matter more than a certificate. I have set out a quarter-by-quarter plan, built on ICAI’s two-year practical training rules, in [AI and articleship: how CA firms should train article assistants now](https://pratikbajoria.com/blog/2026-10-15-ai-and-articleship-how-ca-firms-should-train-article-assistants-now). A good live exercise is the evidence work in [AI for CARO 2020 reporting](https://pratikbajoria.com/blog/2026-10-16-ai-for-caro-2020-reporting-where-it-helps-and-where-judgement-stays).

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the best AI course for chartered accountants in India?

For most CAs, ICAI’s AI for Chartered Accountants (AICA) Level 1 is the sensible first step: three days in a classroom for ₹5,000 plus GST, with 18 structured CPE hours, built around finance and audit use cases. Level 2 (₹10,000 plus GST, with online and in-person days) and the newer Level 3 go deeper. Check ICAI’s AI site for current fees and batches.

### Is an AI certification useful for a CA?

A certificate shows intent, but clients and employers care about what you can do. The value comes from applying AI to a real workflow, with written data rules and review, and being able to show the time saved and errors caught. For a worked example of where review and documentation matter, see [AI for audit working papers in India](https://pratikbajoria.com/blog/2026-09-30-ai-for-audit-working-papers-in-india-what-a-ca-should-automate-and-what-must-stay-human).

### How can chartered accountants learn AI for free?

Start with ICAI’s CA GPT, which is free for members, and a business-grade general assistant on redacted samples of your own work. Then apply it to one workflow for a few weeks and log what changes before paying for further training.

### How can Chartered Accountants use AI?

Use it first on frequent, checkable work: bank categorisation, GST and TDS reconciliation exception lists, notice summaries and first drafts of client emails. Keep a named reviewer, a firm-controlled account and a written rule on which client data may be used.
